Government troops are seen during an assault on insurgents from the so-called Maute group aided by foreign IS-linked militants, who have taken over large parts of Marawi City, Thursday.

Military leaders say the Maute's motivation for taking the city was to raise its profile and earn recognition from Isis. The exodus of thousands of residents has continue. The violence forced thousands to flee and raised fears of growing extremism in the country.

Six of 31 militants killed in the military offensive to secure the besieged city of Marawi were foreigners whose nationalities were still being verified, military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Restituto Padilla said on Friday.

The black flags of the Islamic State group were planted atop buildings and flown from commandeered vehicles, including a government ambulance and an armored auto, said Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr., vice governor of Lanao del Sur province, of which Marawi is the capital. In January, the Philippine military tried to kill him in an airstrike, but he was only wounded.

With much of Marawi a no-go zone, confusion reigned. Plumes of black smoke rose from the direction of the city center and air force helicopters swooped overhead.

Philippine troops backed by armored vehicles and rocket-firing helicopters are fighting to re-take control of Marawi. "We have to finish this".

The southern Philippines has been troubled by decades-long Muslim separatist uprisings in the predominantly Catholic nation.

Hapilon, who is a commander of the Abu Sayyaf militant group, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in 2014. Last year, members of the Maute were arrested in connection with a bombing at a night market in Davao City, Duterte's hometown.
