Manzanita Fire burning in Riverside County

The fire, dubbed the Manzanita Fire, started about 3:10 p.m. on Lambs Canyon near Dump Road following a single vehicle crash, the Riverside County Fire Department said in a news release.

A wildfire burning south of the Riverside County community of Beaumont has jumped to 5,000 acres in size. Kemp said the current fire may indicate what's to come.

The department issued an evacuation warning for Highland Home Road east to Highway 243, including communities of Poppet Flats and Silent Valley.

The massive wildfire was about 10 percent contained as of late Monday night, according to the Riverside County Fire Department, as it continued to blaze between cities of Beaumont and San Jacinto amid dry conditions.

Paramedics took two people involved in the crash to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries was not released. By 11:45 p.m. southbound lanes had re-opened, and traffic was allowed on one northbound lane. Voluntary evacuations were issued for Highland Home, Death Valley and Longhorn roads, as well as Shirleon Drive. Although crews made significant progress, Cal Fire Capt. Chris Kemp said they will have to battle the heat, wind and low humidity while trying to increase containment lines.

More than 30 engine companies, truck companies, brush rigs and several local agencies were helping Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters to contain the blaze. Eight air tankers and three water-dropping helicopters were being used in the firefight.
