NASA spots massive hole on Sun's surface
SDO has collected a vast amount of data on the sun and its place in creating the space weather that can impact Earth. Due to the drop in solar activity, the sun was speckle-free for two days before this swirling sunspot appeared.

Thanks to a geomagnetic storm from the sun, skywatchers across most of Canada and the northern US should get a special treat Sunday night into Monday morning: A visit from the aurora borealis, aka the Northern Lights. For best aurora viewing, it is recommended that sky watchers head to areas far away from city lights.
