'Traders are on red alert as the mention of war has sent them running for cover. Gold is now beating U.S stocks year to date, as well, with hedge fund legend Ray Dalio recommending that investors dedicate 5 to 10 percent of their portfolios to the precious metal.

Gold enjoyed another strong session as traders sought out safe havens, with the price lifting 0.1% to 1,287.8 U.S. dollars an ounce.

However, shares of Dean Foods tumbled, trading 20.1 per cent weaker at US$11.96 as of 2.24pm in NY, after the United States dairy processor posted quarterly results that fell short of expectations and downgraded its full-year forecast amid "a challenging and rapidly evolving retail environment".

USA crude oil crude futures CLc1 edged up 10 cents to $48.69 per barrel.
