An exchange of fire was continuing on Saturday between security forces and militants holed up in a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police said.

In north Kashmir, suspected militants opened fire after police and army started a cordon and search operation at Wahab Parray Mohalla in Hajin area of Bandipora district.

In the initial gunfight five soldiers including an officer sustained injuries and were shifted to military hospital Badamibagh Srinagar.

Among those trapped, the reports said include some top commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen and Laskar-e-Toiba.

SSP Shopian told news agency GNS that the firing has stopped and searches have been launched to trace the bodies of militants. The Army quickly launched a search operation in the area but no arrests were made, the police sources said.
