At least 50 people are feared dead after two buses were swept away by a massive landslide Sunday in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

The coaches had stopped for a tea break around midnight Saturday in Himachal Pradesh when tonnes of rock and mud swept away an entire stretch of highway roughly 200 kilometres (124 miles) from the state capital Shimla.

The army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached the spot and are carrying out rescue operation.

SSP Shopian told news agency GNS that the firing has stopped and searches have been launched to trace the bodies of militants. The Army quickly launched a search operation in the area but no arrests were made, the police sources said.
