An armed conflict between the U.S. and Pyongyang would be a catastrophic event, U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis told reporters on Thursday evening.

The tweet came amid a sharp escalation in tensions between the US and the rogue state, with Pyongyang having earlier threatened to launch missiles at the Pacific island of Guam, where there is a USA military base.

On Tuesday, Trump threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" if Pyongyang made any further threat against the United States.

Asked if he thought North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was a rational actor, Mattis said he would leave it to those seeking the answer to figure out themselves.

Wenger provides update on Sanchez situation
Arsenal have signed two players so far this summer as they prepare to try and challenge for the Premier League title this season. The former Barcelona forward sat out Arsenal's season-opening 4-3 win over Leicester City on Friday due to an abdominal strain.

In response to that "fire and fury" threat, North Korea said its military is preparing to conduct a test firing of four missiles that would fly over Japan and land in waters near the US territory of Guam.

One U.S. military official speaking to NBC spoke of the concern that a pre-emptive attack against the DPRK would result in a response, putting people in South Korea at potential risk.

He also pointed out that the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously last week to sanction North Korea, and label its bellicose statements a "threat to the world's community".

Southampton's scoring woes continue in 0-0 draw vs Swansea
Naturally, Pellegrino isn't fully satisfied with the performance, as he relayed to the Southampton media team . Pellegrino's comments came after his Southampton tenure kicked off with a stalemate against Swansea.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters on Wednesday that Americans had "nothing to fear" from Trump's remarks, and that they had instead been an attempt to use language that Kim Jong Un "would understand".

"The tragedy of war is well enough known", Mattis said, responding to a question about the human toll of a nuclear confrontation between the DPRK and the U.S.

"My responsibility is to have military options if needed", Mattis told a group of reporters in Mountain View, California, where he was visiting a new Department of Defense arm created to speed the integration of new technologies into the US military. He said the US nuclear arsenal is the most powerful it's ever been under his leadership.

An attack would require more military assets than the USA now has stationed in the Korean peninsula and east Asia.
