Consumer Reports Pulls Recommendation for Microsoft Laptops

Microsoft's Surface line of tablets, laptops, and desktops is on the receiving end of a black eye today as Consumer Reports is removing its recommended rating for the hardware. The company's best bet would likely be to mass survey its customers itself and counter with its own findings if they happen to be any better. From that data, the organization estimated that 25% of Microsoft laptops and tablets will encounter some problem within two years of ownership.

All in all, Consumer Reports said that Microsoft's products were a "statistical outlier" when compared to other laptop and tablet brands that were included in the survey.

Consumer Reports pulled its recommendations for the 128GB and 256GB version of the Surface Laptop, along with the 128GB and 512GB versions of the Surface Book. The differences were "statistically significant", we're told, which is why Microsoft lost the "recommended" designation.

Microsoft also pointed out that the Surface Pro, for example, received high performance and versatility marks in Consumer Reports' laptop lab evaluations.

The problems cropped up when the magazine conducted one of its annuals surveys of reader experiences. "And our brand reliability findings have proven to be quite dependable over the years". Earlier this year, Consumer Reports declined to endorse Apple's Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro over inconsistent battery life performance, but updated its rankings after Apple released a software patch that fixed its issue.
