Haase, playing in his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final, did well to force a second-set tiebreak but Federer proved too much to handle in a match during which he fired down nine aces and dropped only nine points on serve.

Unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman posted a unusual win over American Jared Donaldson 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to a quarterfinal meeting with Robin Haase, the 52nd-ranked Dutchman who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1.

Federer has won all seven career matches and taken all 16 sets against the 29-year-old Bautista Agut.

Holland's world number 52 Haase fought back after losing the first set against Argentina's Diego Schwartzman to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Swiss maestro, who recently clinched his 19th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, eased past Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4 in a one-sided quarter-final clash that lasted one hour and eight minutes. "I think I did a good job again, even though it was tough to control the ball".

"So I don't quite know with Robin what I'm going to get. But, as I have practiced with him quite a bit, maybe I am better prepared than if I would have never hit with him before". Obviously the rain delay helped me.

Haase rallied after losing the opening set to improve to 5-0 all-time against Schwartzman. "I started off pretty slow, just drained from (Thursday)".
