Dr Ruth Pfau was the ‘Messiah’ for leprosy patients in Pakistan

Pakistan's "Mother Taresa" Dr Ruth Pfau passed away today due to illness.

Dr Pfau first visited Pakistan in 1960 and was so touched by the plight of leprosy victims that she made a decision to stay forever in the country to treat them.

President Mamnoon Hussain paid tribute to Dr. Pfau saying she had done an "unforgettable" job in eliminating leprosy in the country.

Dr Pfau, the founder of the National Leprosy Control Programme in Pakistan, was in charge of the Marie Adelaide Society of Pakistan (MASP), where leprosy patients are treated.

Pfau, who died Thursday at the age of 87, soon returned to Karachi after her brief stint in India.

En route to work in India, visa complications forced her to break the journey in Karachi, where she visited a lepers' colony.

Later she joined a Catholic order and eventually came to Pakistan in 1960.

For her efforts, Pfau earned the country's second-highest civilian honor, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, in 1979.
