After discovering the infection, Google had to remove 50 malicious applications from its official Play Store.

Gaza : Hamas says it is ready for reconciliation with Fatah
Hoping to pressure Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza, Abbas has cut payments to Israel for the electricity it supplies to Gaza. This means that electricity has often been provided for less than four hours a day, and never more than six.

The malware family uses a common obfuscation technique known as packing that enables apps to hide their maliciousness from Google's scanners by compressing or encrypting the executable file before it's uploaded to Play Store. These apps would send fraudulent SMS messages in order to charge users for fake some services.

The ExpensiveWall malware registers victims to premium services without their knowledge and sends fraudulent premium SMS messages, charging their accounts for fake services. After that, the ExpensiveWall malware sends back to the C&C server handset information, including its location, MAC and IP addresses, IMSI, and IMEI numbers. Until now the users had to install the online poker app from elsewhere (from the poker site) and allow it to be installed from a "unknown source". Google has removed those apps which were malicious after they were announced by Check Point about them and right after that a new malicious app appeared infecting over 5,000 Android devices before having been removed by Google.

Check Point said that applications containing the Android malware, dubbed ExpensiveWall, had been downloaded between 1.2 million and 4 million times. The malware has since been removed but not before one of the applications was downloaded between 5,000 and 10,000 the security vendor reported.

What makes ExpensiveWall different and more risky than its other family members is that it is "Packed" - with an advanced obfuscation technique used by malware creators to encrypt malicious code. The most important expansion, at least for the majority of our Audience was the launching of Voice apps in Australia earlier this month.

"They also need to collaborate closer with security researchers, so that, like in this case, vulnerabilities and malicious app details can be shared quickly and pulled from stores accordingly", he added.
