Sanders described it as the "most ferocious, cruel and merciless storm" the island had ever experienced.

Antigua and Barbuda together became a sovereign nation on 1 November 1981, and it remains part of the British Commonwealth.

Antigua and Barbuda's ambassador to the United States and the Organisation of American States (OAS), Sir Ronald Sanders, on Wednesday morning met with the Inter-American Emergency Aid Committee and representatives of major countries to discuss the impact of Hurricane Irma on Barbuda.

Hurricane Irma destroyed about 95 per cent of the structures on Antigua's sister-isle, Barbuda. Most are now staying on Antigua.

The Barbudan people have been living on the island of #Barbuda for 300 years, but after the 378-mile-wide #Hurricane Irma tore through the 62-square-mile island, "the damage is complete", according to Ronald Sanders, the US ambassador to the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.

The figure was used by Leave campaigners ahead of the referendum but concerns were raised over its accuracy. He wrote: "Once we have settled our accounts, we will take back control of roughly £350 million per week".

"Hurricane Irma was a monster", Sanders said. Barbuda has been left completely devastated by Hurricane Irma.

The Go Fund Me campaign Tyrell started raised more than $3,000 in the first few days; enough to buy supplies and convinced the government to allow access to the island.

"We removed 1700 people plus from Barbuda to Antigua, and we've had to find shelter and food and water, and all of that for them while at the same time thinking about how we get 500 school children into schools", he added.

Sanders says the world must step up and help Barbuda.

6 dead at Florida nursing home without AC after Irma, others evacuated
Florida's post-Irma recovery picked up momentum Friday as power outages dropped and schools made plans to reopen. As of Wednesday, almost 60 percent of customers had electricity restored, according to Florida Power & Light.

"The living conditions are not great", Sanders told PRI. "It's government facilities in which they're being located".

Sanders was recalling the tragic moment Hurricane Irma struck the island of Barbuda.

Right now, initial estimates suggest that Barbuda will need about $200 million to recover.

Known for its peaceful way of life and natural beauty, Barbuda has abundant wildlife both in its thick bushland and in the turquoise waters which surround the 100km wide island with a population of just 1800. 95% of all island buildings have suffered after the hurricane, with a lot of them completely unusable.

"We are a small island community-the gross domestic product of Antigua is $1 billion a year". "We can not cope with our own resources alone".

Gaza : Hamas says it is ready for reconciliation with Fatah
Hoping to pressure Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza, Abbas has cut payments to Israel for the electricity it supplies to Gaza. This means that electricity has often been provided for less than four hours a day, and never more than six.
