Polling starts for NA-120 by-election

It is being expected that a neck to neck contest would be held between two women candidates, Begum Kalsoom Nawaz of PML-N and Dr. Yasmin Rashid, a candidate of PTI.

The polling for by-election in Lahore's NA-120 constituency has begun at 8am and will continue till 5pm amid stringent security measures.

The NA-120 seat of the Lower House of the Parliament is up for grabs again in the "much awaited" by-election today (Sunday), which had fallen vacant after former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's disqualification by the Supreme Court on July 28.

Earlier, the ballot papers were dispatched to all 220 polling stations in the constituency under supervision of Pakistan Army. There are more than 320,000 registered voters in the constituency. The Pakistan Army personnel have been supervising the polling process.

Talking to reporters outside the court, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and Minister for Information Technology Anusha Rahman said the court's decision was a "disappointment" for her party.

According to police sources, all 220 polling stations were declared sensitive to avoid any untoward incident. The PML-N had won all 12 of the total 13 national assembly seats and 26 of 27 PA seats of Lahore in the 2013 election.

Kulsoom is in London where she is undergoing treatment for her throat cancer.

The PTI chairman said that Maryam Nawaz is running the media cell of her party. She led rallies, held public meetings and conventions where she received big public response. "Do you accept this unjust verdict?" she asked her supporters, adding, "If you are against the verdict, then vote for lion on 17 September". Both these candidates have big following on the basis of their respective school of thought and this election will also give them count of the respective vote bank for their future politics.
