Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro Backs Talks With Reluctant Opposition

On Tuesday, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, accepted an invitation by former Spanish prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and the Dominican Republic government to hold a meeting with representatives of the opposition in the Caribbean country in order to continue the dialogue between both parties.

Jorge Rodriguez said prior to the meeting that he believed a resolution to "critical points between the opposition and President Nicolas Maduro" was very close.

"It has been chose to send a delegation to meet with President Medina to present the objectives of the national democratic struggle", the opposition coalition Democratic Unity Roundtable said in a statement.

The president announced yesterday that the socialist leader Jorge Rodriguez will lead the governmental delegation to the meetings, which resulted from an initiative of the Dominican Republic and former head of the Spanish government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

The statement went on to say that Guterres is convinced that "the situation in Venezuela requires a political solution based on dialogue and compromise between the government and the opposition to ensure coexistence among all Venezuelans". "We are in a process of exploration for an agenda that can lead to a definitive negotiation of the crisis", he said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he supports the move to bring both parties in the political crisis to the negotiating table.

Three Senate Democrats got the Republicans to put a 10-point provision in their budget amendment created to do just that. The Republican's state budget proposal passed in the Senate Friday afternoon, after three Democrats switched sides.

Nonetheless, the opposition coalition the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) has denied that it has agreed to dialogue.

"The time for symbolic gestures is over", said the alliance said in a statement.

OPEC and other major producers including Russian Federation agreed at the end of past year to reduce their combined oil output by nearly 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) to help rebalance the market to prices lower crude oil prices. Dialogue between the two sides stalled after the MUD presented the government with a similar set of demands, and later accused the Maduro administration of failing to keep to agreements. The sign of April-July period was the mass anti-government protests, more than 120 people died in protest-related violence during that time.

The order followed the deaths of eight elderly people this week at a sweltering nursing home north of Miami that lost power . At least 56 of Florida's 639 nursing homes still have no electricity on Friday morning, five days after Hurricane Irma .

Mr Maduro has repeatedly urged the opposition to resume talks, but anti-government leaders have refused.

The national government has accused the MUD of trying to oust Venezuela's elected president by force.
