Ending months of speculation about her political future, Collins, who does not face reelection until 2020, opted to stick with the job she has held for the last two decades, even as other moderate GOP lawmakers including Rep. Charlie Dent (Pa.) and Sen.

Prior to her announcement on Friday, Collins, 64, seemed genuinely conflicted about a gubernatorial bid. Susan Collins announced Friday that she will remain in the U.S. Senate and bypass a run for governor.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, is surrounded by reporters as she arrives on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, July 25, 2017, before a test vote on the Republican health care bill.

She would join a crowded field in the race for governor to replace two-term Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who can not run again because of term limits.

It's unclear how many shots were fired by the suspect or police, Harrison said, who added the investigation is still active. It happened at an apartment complex in the 6800 block of Cindy Place, about a block off the I-10.

Ms. Collins had been debating running for the open seat in her state for some time.

LePage has repeatedly bashed Collins, declaring almost a year ago that "she's done in the Republican Party" because she refused to support Trump last year.

Republican Susan Collins says she's staying out of the governor's race because she believes she can do more good for ME by staying in the U.S. Senate. She understands how to craft legislation and use the processes of the Senate, but the GOP leadership is increasingly uninterested in employing them. She chairs the Senate Select Committee on Aging and the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, and also serves on the Intelligence Committee as well as the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, according to her office's web site. The only political race she lost was for governor, in 1994. She said she was "forever grateful" for her increasing support from ME residents. State laws forbid LePage from seeking a third term. She was re-elected with 68.5 percent of votes in 2014, 61.3 percent in 2008 and 58.4 percent in 2002.
