What's the Matter? Scientists Spot the Missing Part of the Universe

The scientists finally detect the 'missing matter' of the Universe

The universe is missing half its matter. Now that it has been accounted for, scientists can feel more confident in their work. When it comes to normal matter; the stuff we are made of including protons, neutrons and electrons, there's also a chunk missing.

Actually, Baryonic matter mainly consists of many building block particles like protons neutrons and electrons and they only make up about 4.6 percent of everything, with dark energy and dark matter comprising the rest. This is called the missing baryons problem.

Two separate groups of scientists have discovered this missing matter that confirms the actuality and assumptions regarding the universe.

Using 3-D maps of the universe created by the Sloane Sky Digital Survey, the two teams picked out galaxies that would likely be linked by filaments.

International Day of the Girl Child
This year's theme- is "Girls' Progress = Goals Progress: What Counts for Girls", is indeed timely. Investing in girls is investing in peace and prosperity, " it further added.

In 2015, the European Space Agency's Planck satellite mapped much of this effect throughout the observable universe. As this light moves through hot gas, some of it scatters, leaving a patch in the CMB.

With a total of 260,000 pairs of such galaxies already explored, it turned out that in filamentary structures between them, baryonic matter is several times denser than elsewhere in the universe. Furthermore, they found the matter was far denser than average-in Tanimura's paper it was up to three times denser, while in Graaf's paper it was as much as six.

"This result establishes the presence of ionised gas in large-scale filaments, and suggests that the missing baryons problem may be resolved via observations of the cosmic web", said the authors of the second study.

"We expect some differences because we are looking at filaments at different distances", says Tanimura.

House-sized asteroid will pass near to Earth this week
There is little to be done in terms of planetary defence at the moment, except carry out evacuations of anyone in harm's way. It has been described as a dress-rehearsal in case a similar asteroid hits the Earth.

'If this factor is included, our findings are very consistent with the other group.

Ralph Kraft, from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in MA, said the findings help align the discrepancy between observations and simulations of the universe. "This goes a long way toward showing that many of our ideas of how galaxies form and how structures form over the history of the universe are pretty much correct", said Ralph Kraft, a professor at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in MA.

Dr. Ralph Kraft, an astrophysicist from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center of Astrophysics at MA in US State, explained that, "Everybody sort of knows that it has to be there, but this is the first time that somebody - two different groups, no less - has come up with a definitive detection".
