Iran calls on Trump to put house in order

On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the people of Iran were free to protest peacefully, but rejected protesting by violence.

Early Tuesday, Iranian state TV reported that rioters had tried to break into a police station in the town of Qahdarijan to steal guns, leading to clashes that killed six people. "However, at the same time, in order to preserve our country, our nation, our tranquility and peace, for all of this, we must be firm and act decisively".

That warning didn't stop President Trump from taking to Twitter, where he said the people of Iran were finally acting against what he called a brutal and corrupt Iranian regime.

Trump tweeted that "the U.S.is watching" the ongoing anti-government demonstrations across Iran, blaming the nuclear deal struck with the support of former President Obama for, he said, lining the pockets of the Iranian government.

As Iranians take to the streets in the biggest demonstrations in almost a decade, residents of the increasingly tense capital say they sympathize with the protesters' economic grievances and anger at official corruption. Protestors have now taken issue with President Hassan Rouhani and the country's leaders for their failure to deliver economic growth after global sanctions were lifted following Obama's nuclear deal. As the Financial Tribune, an English-language publication that covers the Iranian economy, writes: "Lawmakers criticized the hypocrisy of the recent statements by United States officials claiming support for the Iranian nation, saying the U.S. can not act one way and behave another way".

Western intelligence officials are split on whether a new round of US economic sanctions will help anti-government protesters in Iran or work to the benefit of the Iranian authorities by feeding into their claims that the unrest has been fomented by foreign enemies. Conway said, "This president stands with the Iranian people in their quest to get basic freedoms".

On Thursday state media focused on pro-government rallies after a second night without reports of major protests.

Israeli Prime Minister praised the Iranian anti-government protesters on Monday and denied Tehran's "laughable" accusations that Israel was behind the demonstrations.

Six days of demonstrations - which have left at least 20 people dead - showed no signs of easing as the anger from the streets found new targets. This is the biggest protests the country has seen since the unrest in 2009 following the re-election of then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In Tehran alone, 450 protesters have been arrested in the last three days, the semi-official ILNA news agency reported on Tuesday.

Toronto-area real estate agent Omid Valinasab said one of his friends was beaten by government forces during Iran's last widespread wave of civil unrest in 2009, simply because he was walking to work in an area near the protests.

Iran's state prosecutor Haji Reza Shakrami has said: "We are not now providing statistical data on the total number of detainees". Before long, however, protesters had moved on to politics, with protesters chanting "death to the dictator" - apparently a reference to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - on Sunday.

In addition, most foreign journalists are barred from the country and the Iran government has shut down some social media channels inside the country.

In what seemed a veiled criticism of the Obama administration's response to those demonstrations, Haley said Tuesday that "the worldwide community made the mistake of failing" to support Iranian protesters in 2009.

"Look at the recent days' incidents", Khamenei said Tuesday.

With each person contributing three hours of service, it totaled to 294 hours of volunteering for multiple causes. He said he would like to see improvements in community policing, economic development and education.

Iranian security officials appear to be calm about the protests in Iran - in their statements anyway.
