Trump Trades Blows with Canada

Canada and the US are continuing to negotiate over the North American Free Trade Agreement, with the next round of talks scheduled for January 23, the Washington Examiner reported. There are 122 instances involving various countries listed in the WTO filing, which dates to December.

Canadian newsprint joined softwood lumber as the latest commodity to incur US import duties, with up to 9 percent levied on various companies.

Lighthizer argued that a win for Canada would mainly help other countries like China, which would take any opportunity to dump their low-cost imports into the USA market.

"It's interesting that Canada has chosen to file such a broad complaint", Boscariol told CBA National.

Faison takes issue with Sessions' marijuana directive
Members of Congress have called the action "heartless and cold" and one that "bulldozes over the will of the American people". Colorado's US attorney, Bob Troyer, said his office won't change its approach to prosecution, despite Sessions' guidance.

Anti-dumping and countervailing duties - punitive tariffs to restrict imports that are unfairly priced or subsidised in order to beat the competition - are a core component of Washington's trade arsenal, and frequently used to defend US interests.

The 32-page complaint homed in on technical details of the U.S. trade rulebook, ranging from the U.S. treatment of export controls to the use of retroactive duties and split decisions by the six-member U.S. International Trade Commission.

The filing also complained about US treatment of export controls as well as the imposition of retroactive tariffs. Missing from Lighthizer's statement, naturally, was any mention of how the administration he works for has lowered confidence in the U.S.'s commitment to mutually beneficial trade.

However, he explained that US President Donald Trump's administration "dislikes" the WTO's dispute-settlement body and believes that countries rely on it "inappropriately to achieve results they can't achieve through negotiations".

"The WTO was set up for the benefit [of] everybody but us".

The Canadian move is "bold for sure and slightly risky", said Christopher Sands, director of the Center for Canadian Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. But he questioned the strategic logic of antagonizing the Trump administration in the midst of NAFTA talks. However, the U.S. called the claims unfounded.

The complaint covers actions taken against not just Canada but countries all around the world, from Japan to South Africa.

"These rates tabled lby the USA on uncoated groundwood paper represent the third action that stands to hurt hard working men and women in our mill communities across Canada", says Derek Nighbor, CEO, Forest Products Association of Canada. The Canadian government is preparing for the possibility that Trump will withdraw from NAFTA, senior officials say, though they aren't entirely convinced that he will.

The town's ironworks supplied rails to railways in the United Kingdom and overseas , making it the world's largest by 1845. In 2012 Melrose bought utility metering firm Elster for £1.8bn and sold it three years later to Honeywell for £3.3bn.

He said that during the current NAFTA negotiations, which enter the sixth round in Canada later this month, the United States has made it clear that it wants to remove a dispute-resolution mechanism for anti-dumping and countervailing cases under Chapter 19 of the 24-year-old trilateral trade agreement. Canada is bracing for the possibility Mr. Trump will trigger a withdrawal in the coming weeks.
