United States can not undermine Iran nuclear deal: Rouhani

United States president Donald Trump yesterday declared he would extend the controversial Iran nuclear deal for another year, adding that he was giving Europe and the U.S. a last chance to address the "terrible flaws" in the 2015 agreement. But his explicit warning to Europe that the deal must be fixed by the time the next sanctions waivers are due in the spring creates a high-stakes diplomatic deadline that will be hard to meet.

He said he's waiving nuclear sanctions under the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action upon advice from his advisers. Washington also imposed sanctions on the head of Iran's judiciary and others. Trump wants them to help the USA devise a new agreement created to prevent Iran from escalating nuclear activity again next decade, as permitted under the 2015 arrangement reached by President Barack Obama.

"It's incumbent on those who oppose the (deal) really to come up with that better solution, because we haven't seen it so far", he said.

Trump said he had reluctantly agreed to extend the waivers only to secure the support of America's European allies to fix the agreement.

Trump to attend the World Financial Discussion board at Davos
The former Goldman Sachs banker and Hollywood financier added "the economy that is good for the U.S.is good for the world". Trump will be attending the annual influential gathering in Switzerland later this month.

A man who has taken power in the United States is unfortunately addressing the world nations with 'vulgar and unacceptable words, ' Iranian foreign minister said here on Saturday.

Trump's declaration puts great pressure on Britain, France and Germany, the European signatories to nuclear pact with Iran.

While there may be some relief that Trump has yet to torpedo the hard-won accord, there were clear signs of frustration from European capitals in the runup to the decision.

Those hit by the sanctions include: Iranian judiciary chief Sadegh Amoli Larijani; the Rajaee Shahr Prison and its director, Gholamreza Ziaei; the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Electronic Warfare and Cyber Defense Organization; Iran's Supreme Council of Cyberspace and National Cyberspace Center; Malaysia-based Green Wave Telecommunication and its Iranian director Morteza Razavi; and the Iran Helicopter Support and Renewal Company and Iran Aircraft Industries.

"So Trump now has issued explicit May deadline to Congress and Europeans: Fix Iran nuke deal or no more sanctions waivers", wrote Mark Dubowitz, head of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies.

The president's proposals to "fix the deal's disastrous flaws" include Iran's agreement to open all sites immediately to global inspectors and an assurance from Tehran that it will never develop a nuclear weapon.

He did not set a deadline, but under USA law the president is required to waive sanctions every four months.

After Tehran had implemented its part of the deal, which was confirmed during IAEA's inspection trips, on January 16, 2016 the US administration under President Barack Obama lifted sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program.
