Carragher's Range Rover had pulled up beside her United-supporting dad's auto in heavy traffic after Saturday's Old Trafford match.

Carragher, who had been covering the match as a SKY Sports pundit, last night phoned the girl and her father and said: "I just want to apologise and I hope you are OK".

The auto driver says: "There's Jamie's Carragher there, look", before shouting "2-1, 2-1, unlucky Jamie lad, 2-1 lad".

The incident, recorded by the girl's father, ends with the daughter saying to her dad that Carragher's spittle had hit her in the face.

On Sunday night, Carragher issued an apology on Twitter, saying that he was "totally out of order" and that he had apologised to all of the family personally. "Someone like him who is older should be able to take a joke". "It was nothing. I could understand if someone was in his face, giving him abuse".

"She was crying. She said, 'I'm embarrassed, he has just spat in my face".

I was shocked more than angry when he did it because I couldn't believe what had happened'.

At that point Carragher, who has wound down his window, spits towards the auto. I was stunned. I had not insulted him. I have not got out and banged on his auto.

The Aussies racked up two tries in the first four minutes and a third converted try by John Porch saw them lead 19-0 at the break. The All Blacks Sevens are now second in the standings, 10 points behind South Africa, heading into the sixth round of the series.

"I've met footballers before and they have always been very accommodating".
