60 Minutes’ Report Takes Aim at Allegiant Air

It was always going to be an uncomfortable ride.

Shares of Allegiant Air's parent company are tumbling in Monday, April 16, 2018, premarket trading following a "60 Minutes" investigation that expressed serious safety concerns about the airline. In a recent television report, it was revealed that the airline has more breakdowns than any other airline. The "60 Minutes" piece details an incident involving Captain Jason Kinzer, who was sacked in 2015 six weeks after turning around shortly after takeoff due to smoke in the cabin.

"CBS produced a one-sided narrative by cherry-picking interviews and ignoring publicly-available facts", said Allegiant's response to the report.

"They don't have the number of mechanics", Goglia told "60 Minutes" for its report. Since that time, the FAA said it has conducted ongoing evaluations of Allegiant's safety compliance, as it does with all airlines, and has not identified any significant problems.

In the agency's defense, the FAA Associate administrator Ali Bahrami said in a letter that "The FAA is vigilant in scrutinizing the actions of all airlines and is prepared to act on all information".

Wes Alshara of Mason City believes it is the airline's ultimate responsibility to make it right for their passengers if they encounter delays or problems.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant was founded in 1997 and operates 85 aircraft and 350 routes in the United States, according to the company's website.

Subsequently, an FAA investigator found that a vital component had not been maintained.

"The times [with Allegiant Air] were more convenient, [and] there were no connections".

Allegiant, which has never had a crash, noted that it has carried 90 million passengers safely since beginning operations in 2001 and that it has less than a third as many MD-80s in its fleet as Delta.

All of this made me feel queasy.

"I do prefer to fly out of Rockford, but also I like to stay safe", said Allegiant flyer Debbie Rosales.

The company put out the following statement from vice president of operations Eric Gust.

A separate statement sent by Allegiant Air to customers following the "60 Minutes" report calls the segment an "irresponsible, grossly misleading story", and says the report was instigated by a terminated employee who is suing the airline.

A Tampa Bay Times investigation - which included a first-of-its kind analysis of federal aviation records - has found that the budget carrier's planes are four times as likely to fail during flight as those operated by other major USA airlines.

"We have to get home to Bozeman through Allegiant so I'm hoping that our plane is safe", says Walnum.

The number of Allegiant's serious safety problems were three-and-a-half times greater than the nation's other major airlines, according to the report.

A spokesperson for Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport said, Allegiant is undergoing a plan to replace McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft with Airbus 319 and 320 models.

This is a reduction of over half since 2012 when 818 children required a local authority allocation to a school with places. The class will have one preschool teacher and one paraprofessional and will be open for the 2018-19 school year.

But the CBS program offered just enough to warrant a little caution. I certainly would not fly my own family if I had any concerns.
