No Echo here: Apple reportedly cut orders for its HomePod smart speaker last month

Dilger added: "notably, Bloomberg has consistently been wrong in its portrayal of the future of the tech industry, from its cheerleading of Chromebooks that the enterprise soundly rejected, to bashing Apple Watch sales to its current assault on HomePod".

Apple has lowered its forecasts for the HomePod and cut orders for the smart speaker due to lackluster sales, reports Bloomberg. For starters, the HomePod - with its $349 sticker price - is far more expensive than both the Amazon Echo and Google Home. After debuting to mediocre reviews, the smart speaker's proclivities for damaging wood and stumbling on Siri requests became obvious, compelling Apple to work on fixes that are still in progress. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report claims that inventory in retail locations is "piling up", with some Apple stores said to be selling "fewer than 10 HomePods a day". HomePod speaker sits on display during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California, US on 5 June, 2017. During its first 10 weeks of sales, the HomePod captured 10% of the smart speaker market, compared to 73% for Amazon and 14% for Google. When the Echo debuted four years ago as Apple engineers were toiling away on early versions of the HomePod, their bosses continued to see the product as a high-quality speaker rather than a voice-controlled digital assistant for the home. That's the novelty of this type of device, not really the quality of the speaker where Apple is placing it's priority. Apple declined to comment. Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster told Bloomberg that he expects Apple to sell 7 million HomePods in 2018 and 11 million next year. The product was supposed to be released in December just in time for the holidays, but Apple missed the release and delayed the product. Alphabet is expected to sell 18 million Google Home devices this year and 32 million next year.
