Barbara Bush in failing health

A family spokesman says former first lady Barbara Bush is in "failing health" and won't seek additional medical treatment. She is also the mother of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and four other children, one of whom died at an early age of leukemia.

The spokesman said Bush is "surrounded by a family she adores" and appreciates the messages and prayers she's received.

People are generally aware that Bush Sr. suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease that has him in a wheelchair; however, most were not aware of the former first lady's health problems, which started about two years ago.

At 92 years old, Barbara Bush has been suffering for some time and has been in and out of the hospital multiple times in the last year while battling with COPD and congestive heart failure.

She and Former President George H.W. Bush have been married for 73 years and have both been dealing with health issues.

Bush is battling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and congestive heart failure and has been hospitalized several times over the a year ago.

She also defended them against detractors, from those who criticized her husband's decision to raise taxes in 1990 to those who opposed her son's decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003.

Bush holds a unique place in United States history.
