Jaguar Land Rover to cut jobs and production – and to blame Brexit

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover is planning to cut jobs as it scales back production at some of its United Kingdom sites amid what it termed as "headwinds" impacting the automotive industry.

While JLR has neither confirmed nor denied the job losses, a company spokesperson told the news site that the vehicle firm would be making "some adjustments" to its production schedules and the levels of agency staff.

"On Monday [16 April 2018] we will be cascading our 18/19 production plans for the next fiscal year to our workforce".

Equal Pay Day, a movement to end the gender pay gap
Right now, United Kingdom science organizations are paying female employees significantly less than their male colleagues. In contrast, the gender pay gap for architects is just 4.4 per cent and for chartered surveyors it is eight per cent.

The company said in the statement that it's continuing to recruit large numbers of engineers, graduates and apprentices as it invests in new products and technologies, and remains committed to United Kingdom plants in which it has spent more than £4 billion since 2010.

Despite the job losses the company went on to say: "We also remain committed to our United Kingdom plants in which we have invested more than £4bn since 2010 to future proof manufacturing technologies to deliver new models".

An insider told Reuters that auto production at the company's factories in Solihull and Castle Bromwich would be cut, resulting in 1,000 agency workers losing their jobs.

JLR employs 40,000 people in the United Kingdom, with 10,000 of the workforce based at Solihull. Earlier in 2018 JLR cut production at the Halewood, Merseyside plant, citing Brexit uncertainty and the dwindling market for diesel cars. Over 90 per cent of the company's United Kingdom sales are from diesel vehicles.

However, the Tata Group company said the automotive industry continues to face a "range of challenges" which are adversely affecting consumer confidence. Following on from a record-breaking 2017, in which the company sold 621,109 cars, Jaguar demand is down 26% in the year-to-date and Land Rover - the group's bigger brand - has lost a fifth of demand in the UK.
