Senate Passes Higher Education Budget, No Penalties for MSU, New Sexual Assault Reporting

A survivor of sexual abuse from Larry Nassar alleged on Friday that Michigan State interim president John Engler tried to pay her off to settle her civil lawsuit. When I explained that it's not about the money for me and that I just want to help, he said "well give me a number". It was like a 45 minute, hour-long meeting (I had with Engler) and he probably brought up money like 12 times.

The atmosphere inside the board meeting quickly drew tension as Engler attempted to steer focus toward celebrating milestones of the university but was usurped by boos and jeers from a crowd clad in teal shirts with the phrase, "I stand with the sister survivors #MeTooMSU".

Kaylee Lorincz's attorney, John Manly, said Friday that Lorcinz and her mother called him and told him about the meeting the day after it happened. "I said again, it's not about money".

That's when she said Engler asked her this question: "Right now, if I wrote you a check for $250,000, would you take it?"

"My interpretation of the discussion was not that he was saying, 'I'm offering you $250,000, '" Emily Gerkin said. Carol Viventi said, 'Well you're in civil litigation, aren't you?

Engler, a former MI governor, took over as the university's interim president in early February after Lou Anna Simon stepped down amid heavy criticism for how she and the school had handled fallout from the Nassar case.

Denhollander, when reached after Friday's board meeting, denied meeting with Engler and said she did not offer a number.

She continued: 'This how it works.

Denhollander said she has never met with Engler. I then told him, murder is still murder no matter how you do it. I am sorry if anything said during the meeting was misunderstood. "No one has given him a number".

"It's MSU for ya, I guess", Lorincz told reporters after the trustee's meeting. Manly said represented parties in civil lawsuits are not typically supposed to interact with each other without their attorneys present. "You're not even supposed to say hello if you pass each other in the restroom. Did they not think they were going to get caught?" Lorincz went on to finish her statement despite being told repeatedly she was out of time. "My jaw dropped, and I said 'Just a slap on the butt?"

Trustees Mitch Lyons and Brian Mosallam were stunned by the allegations.

Said trustee Brian Mosallam: "If Kaylee Lorincz's story is correct, I am beyond disturbed".

Engler also discussed effort to restructure MSU's Title IX office and add more staff to its counseling center for sexual assault victims.

In a separate case, a woman sued the school on Monday, saying university counselors discouraged her from filing a police report after three Michigan State basketball players allegedly raped her in 2015.
