Britain may be ready to launch retaliatory cyber attacks against Russia

In February, the British foreign office officially put on the Russian government responsible for a massive cyber attack using a virus-the extortioner NotPetya that they gave in June previous year, hundreds of thousands of computers around the world.

Further, the cyber-exploits were directed at network infrastructure devices worldwide such as routers, switches, firewalls, network intrusion detection system.

It followed a series of warnings by Western governments that Moscow is behind a string of cyber attacks.

The Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The National Weather Service has confirmed tornadoes touched down during a severe weather outbreak in the Carolinas. Officials say heavy snow caused part of a hotel roof to collapse in northeastern Wisconsin, but no one was hurt.

Moscow has denied previous accusations that it carried out cyber attacks on the United States and other countries.

The attack focused on governments, businesses, "critical infrastructure", and internet service providers. The statement did not identify any victims by name.

As tensions remain high over Russia's involvement in Syria, its alleged tampering in the 2016 USA election and the poisoning of a former Russian spy, the United Kingdom and U.S. say that Russia will be held accountable for the cyber-attacks.

The imminent attack was not, however, linked to allied nations' missile strikes on Saturday in Syria, Britain's Press Association (PA) news agency reported, citing White House cybersecurity coordinator Rob Joyce.

Rob Joyce, the White House cyber-security coordinator has issued a range of actions including sanctions and indictments upon Russian Federation.

"The UK Government will continue to work with the U.S., other global allies and industry partners to expose Russia's unacceptable cyber behaviour, so they are held accountable for their actions", PA quoted NCSC chief executive Ciaran Martin as saying.
